Kadee Couplers

I have several different games that the teams that look like fingers prototype, but I do not know if they are all designed to decouple a magnet and more .... Can I use a standard magnet, or should be electrically charged?

I work mainly in N-scale, but endorsed "Model Railroader" magazine for several years and have seen several brands of magnetic couplers.

I use a mixture of strong and electro-magnets on my network.
